Outdoor Skills School Map & Compass 101 will help you learn to translate the two-dimensional topographical map to the three-dimensional terrain surrounding you. During this classroom session, essential map reading skills will begin as the groundwork, followed by an introduction to the compass, by the end you'll be using these two tools together. By the end of this class you will have the foundational knowledge to put these skills to use on Saturday morning. Weather permitting we'll go up to the rooftop of Rhinegeist and practice Triangulation at the end of the class!

Outdoor Skills School's Map & Compass Excursion will be held at McFarlan Woods. This half day outing will allow you to use the skills learned in Map & Compass 101 in a real outdoor setting. During this 3.5 mile, moderately strenuous hike, we will relate the terrain around us with the topographical map of the area. WIth the use of our compasses and map reading skills we will navigate points that the group plots themselves, prior to beginning the hike. McFarlan Woods is a portion of Mt. Airy Forest, Cincinnati's largest urban park and this is a great way to explore it!
